Councils for Voluntary Service (CVS) have been around in Scotland since the 1800s.

There are CVSs in some shape or form in each local authority area across Scotland and a number of federations in areas covered by more than one CVS. Councils for Voluntary Service are key infrastructure organisations, which exist to support local organisations of all types, sizes and client groups.

CVSs generally provide a range of support and services, both directly and indirectly, which assist local organisations and community groups to:

  • address unmet needs
  • improve and maintain organisational standards
  • facilitate participation of voluntary and community groups in partnership working
  • increase the capacity of community to participate in decision making
  • ensure representation of their organisations views and concerns to all interested parties

Some CVS will be directly involved in providing services to their community where appropriate, while others will be more engaged in supporting and developing local organisations to deliver them. Each CVS is unique and different local circumstances and different issues will dictate the role that CVS plays at any time.

In 2010 the government made the decision to create 'Third sector interfaces' in each local authority area.  Funding that had previously been awarded to CVS's was now to go directly to the interfaces.  Whilst this was dissapointing, CVSC has and will continue to support the Community, Voluntary and Social Enterprise sector (theThird Sector) of Clackmannanshire to thrive, through the provision of services that add value to the work of the TSI.

Our Aims for the Next 9 months are as follows

1.       To strengthen the governance of CVS Clackmannanshire

2.       To raise awareness of the new role of the CVS from April 2011 working independently but adding value to  Clackmannanshire Third Sector Interface

3.       To explore and identify income sources to support long term sustainability of organisation including potential for development of:

a.       Strategic sustainability mentoring service

b.       Establishing a Third Sector Hub

c.        Learning and leadership support programme for the sector

4.       To develop a volunteering programme for the CVS

5.       To maintain selected core services that generate income
